Welcome to the San Juan County Adult Detention Center Page.

The current detention center was built in 1982 to house 140 inmates.   Over the years many renovations have been made to accommodate its current capacity of 600+ beds.

The secure portion of the jail opened in January of 1982.  Installation of second bunks began immediately, bringing the capacity to 208.

The Work Release Annex opened in July 1985 with 90 additional beds, bringing the capacity to 244.  The latest addition to that section opened in 1997 increasing the capacity to 365.

The new W-1 Unity, with a capacity of 40, was completed in 2000 and gives the Detention Center the ability to completely separate work release inmates from our main population.  This helps control contraband providing a more safe environment.

To eliminate any concerns of overcrowding, in August 2001, a military tent was placed inside the existing secure compound.  The tent houses up to 80 minimum security inmates and has saved San Juan County tax payers approximately $2 million.

The current facility is presently authorized to house a total of 633 maximum, medium and minimum security inmates.
