ABOUT THE FACILITY

The current Juvenile Services Facility is a 24-bed, secure, long-term detention facility.  The facility is responsible for the care and the custody of juveniles who are placed on a detention hold by the Juvenile Probation and Parole Office.

Juveniles may be detained for the following reasons:  an arrest for allegedly committing an offense, on a warrant, court ordered detention, or as part of an order sanctioning the juvenile for violating the terms of probation or conditional release.

It is the objective of the Juvenile Services Department to provide juveniles and staff a safe, clean, and protective environment.  It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure the safety of our residents in compliance with policies and procedures and juvenile detention standards.

NEW FACILITY INFORMATION

In 1996 San Juan County appointed a task force to serve on a Juvenile Solutions Committee.  The committee's responsibility was to evaluate problems in juvenile delinquency and identify potential solutions for reform.  Our Juvenile Courts, Juvenile Probation, District Attorneys, Public Defenders, local police agencies and community members took part.  As a result, and concern for our youth, San Juan County introduced the concept of a Juvenile Complex.

San Juan County has recently broken ground on this Juvenile Justice Complex that will include space for an assessment center, secure detention, treatment and shelter beds.  Anticipated completion is late 2003.

The facility will provide a “one-stop” location to address juvenile problems.  San Juan County also hopes to provide early intervention and assessment of at-risk juveniles, in order to divert the juvenile and families into a community-based program.  This quick turnaround process will provide a specific response to the individual needs and family circumstances, thereby reducing the risk of re-offending.
