Profile:
Commissioner Tony Atkinson is the County Commissioner for District 5 in San Juan County, New Mexico. He has also served as Chairman in 2007, 2008 and 2011. Commissioner Atkinson began his career with San Juan County in 1977 as the Director of the County’s Data Processing Department. In 1989 he assumed the position of County Manager until he retired in 2004 to run for County Commission. He is a graduate of Leadership San Juan, Leadership New Mexico, and New York University’s County Leadership Institute.
In past years, Commissioner Atkinson has served as President and Vice-President of the New Mexico Association of Counties, a member of the Board of Directors for San Juan County Crime Stoppers, Farmington Chamber of Commerce, Farmington Economic Development Service, San Juan Economic Development Service, Tres Rios High School Rodeo Association and the San Juan County Museum Association.
Commissioner Atkinson currently serves on the Board of Directors for:
New Mexico Association of Counties, where he currently serves as Immediate past President
Leadership New Mexico, as well as Chairman of the Board
Leadership San Juan, also serving as President
San Juan Safe Communities Initiative
Commissioner Atkinson feels it is important to be involved in community organizations. As part of his continued commitment to the community, he is a member of the San Juan County Rotary Club, where he has been honored with a Paul Harris Fellowship. Mr. Atkinson also serves on the Executive Committee of the San Juan Water Commission.
A graduate of Farmington High School, Commissioner Atkinson is a graduate of Long Beach Community College, attended California State College at Long Beach, and graduated from the University of Arizona’s Southwest Government Program. |
