Dear San Juan County Community,

Over the past several months, I have received questions from residents regarding the possibility of data centers locating in San Juan County and what impacts those facilities could have on our communities, particularly related to water use, electric demand, infrastructure, and quality of life. I appreciate your interest and want to provide an update on what we know today.

Like many communities across the country, San Juan County has attracted interest because of its strategic advantages, including abundant and affordable natural gas, existing electric transmission infrastructure, available land, and a skilled workforce. While we are aware companies are exploring opportunities in the region, there are currently no data center projects that have been submitted for approval or permitted through San Juan County.

I understand the concerns many residents have regarding water consumption, power generation, and the long-term impacts these facilities may have on our communities. Should a project come before the County Commission, these and many other issues would be carefully evaluated.

While there are no active County projects under consideration today, this conversation highlights the importance of planning for our future. San Juan County is currently updating its Growth Management Plan, a long-range policy document that helps guide future decisions regarding economic development, infrastructure, natural resources, housing, transportation, and community priorities. As part of this effort, we are seeking public input on the future of our county, including perspectives on emerging industries such as data centers.

I encourage every resident to participate in this important planning effort. County representatives will be available at the San Juan County Fair (August 10-15) to gather public input on the Growth Management Plan update. This is one of upcoming public opportunities for you to share your input. Your ideas and perspectives will help shape policies that reflect the values and priorities of our community for years to come.

San Juan County has always balanced responsible economic development with protecting the quality of life that makes our community such a special place to live, work, and raise a family. That commitment remains unchanged. As your County Commission Chairman, we will continue to provide accurate information and maintain a transparent public process.
