NOTICE:
Burn permits are not being issued.
Burn permits are issued on a day-to-day basis, and only when weather conditions allow. The burn recommendation is posted on the San Juan County Fire & Rescue Facebook page. Get the daily burn recommendation in your email inbox or by text by using the form below.
Permits for open burning are REQUIRED
San Juan County Ordinance 6 adopts the 2021 International Fire Code as the Fire Code of San Juan County.
Section 307
Open Burning, Recreational Fires, and Portable Outdoor Fireplaces.
Section 307.2 Permit Required:
A permit shall be obtained from the fire code official in accordance with section 105.5 prior to kindling a fire for recognized silviculture or range or wildlife management practices, prevention or control of disease or pest, or a bonfire. Application for such approval shall only be presented by and permits issued to the owner of the land in which the fire is to be kindled on.
Open burning is further regulated in State statute-
New Mexico Administrative Code 20.2.60 NMAC – Open Burning
The San Juan County Fire & Rescue ONLY issues burn permits for burns in the unincorporated portion of San Juan County, City of Bloomfield, and Town of Kirtland.
For a burn permit in the city of Aztec
For a burn permit in the City of Bloomfield call (505) 334-1180 and (505) 334-6622 on Friday, Weekends, & Holidays.
For a burn Permit in the City of Farmington or call (505) 599-1430
The burn recommendation is based on a number of factors, including weather. If atmosphere conditions allow, burn permits will be for all day, or just until noon.
On burn days, you can call between 7:00 am and noon to request a burn permit.
Monday through Thursday, burn permits can be issued by calling Fire Operations at (505) 334-1180.
On Friday, weekends, and holidays, call the San Juan County Communications Authority at (505) 334-6622.
Rules for burn Permits
Burn permits entitle the holder to burn plant material ONLY.
Burn permits are intended for the use of small agricultural burns only, for large burns please call Fire Operations to have the proposed burn area inspected prior to burning.
If you are granted a burn permit, you must stay aware of wind conditions, and extinguish the fire if wind conditions change and could cause the spread of fire.
The fire MUST stay 50 feet away from any structure or power line.
You must have water nearby and available for use.
You MAY NOT leave the fire unattended.
If your permit is granted, you may begin to burn at sunrise, and the fire must be completely out by noon, or sunset, depending on the permit issued.
You must call 911 IMMEDIATELY if the fire gets out of control.
