San Juan County Convenience Stations are operated by permit from the New Mexico Environment Department. Permit conditions limit how much trash the County can receive each day and what an individual can dump. Commercial trash is prohibited. The transfer stations are a convenience for residential waste disposal and cannot receive the same volume and materials as the landfill.

SECTION 5.  LIMITATIONS. ---

1. Customers may dispose of up to three (3) cubic yards of waste material per day. A trailer 8’ x 6’ x 2’ or a long wide bed pickup, level full, holds an estimated three (3) cubic yards.
2. Extra long trailers may be directed to the landfill.
3. Residents may dispose up to four (4) tires per month.
4. Patrons are responsible for cleaning up any debris that falls on the ramp as they unload.
5. It is not the responsibility of the station attendants to assist with unloading.

SECTION 6.  ACCEPTABLE WASTE. ---

1. Residential household trash.
2. Paper goods.
3. Cardboard boxes (flattened).
4. Cans.
5. Glass.
6. Old clothing.
7. Yard waste.
8. Weeds.
9. Small tree branches (five (5) foot lengths maximum).
10. Cold ashes, if station has ash bins.

SECTION 7.  UNACCEPTABLE WASTE. --- (Note:  Items 1 through 7 listed below can be disposed of through the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program held in the Spring and Fall each year.)

1. Liquid waste (any kind).
2. Pesticides.
3. Used motor oil
4. Antifreeze.
5. Grease.
6. Paint (lead based).
7. Auto/equipment batteries.
8. Smoldering ashes.
9. Dead animals or animal parts.
10. Toxic waste.
11. Medical waste.
12. Large trees or tree branches in excess of five (5) feet in length.
13. Commercial/business waste.
14. Construction or demolition debris.
15. Truck or equipment tires.

San Juan County will accept the following recyclable materials at all 12 of the Solid Waste Convenience Stations at no charge to the public:

Single Stream Recycling:

• Flattened corrugated cardboard
• Bagged aluminum cans
• Plastic bottles and containers
• Paper

Metal and Appliance Recycling:

• Refrigerators and freezers (with or without Freon in them) - doors need to be removed
• Washers and dryers
• Hot water heaters
• Wheels (without the tire)
• Misc. steel such as car bumpers, hoods, bed frames, etc.

Items not allowed in recycling:

• Food and liquids
• Foam cups and containers
• Plastic Bags
• Glass bottles and jars
• Styrofoam
• Garbage
• Clothing, furniture and carpet
• Batteries

FAQ:

Q: Why is there a limit to how much trash and what I can bring to a transfer station?

A: The New Mexico Environment Department issues the county a permit to run a transfer station, and permit conditions limit how much trash the County can receive each day and what an individual can dump. Commercial trash is prohibited. The transfer stations are a convenience for residential waste disposal and cannot receive the same volume and materials as the landfill.

Q: Why do I have to pay to dump my trash?

A: Well, nothing is free. The minimal fee you pay for dumping isn’t even enough to cover the cost of staff, trucks and the fee we pay to dump your trash at the landfill (Yes, San Juan County pays to dump your trash at the landfill)

Q: What about illegal dump sites? Who is going to clean that up?

A: San Juan County has a crew working one day a week to clean up dump sites that are reported using the Clean Up San Juan App. Crews work with law enforcement to identify and prosecute illegal dumpers and are working through the list of reported dump sites.
