We train our deputies regularly in accordance with the law, policies, and best practices. These professional trainings directly impact the level of service our deputies provide to the citizens of San Juan County.

Some of the responsibilities of this division include:

  • Defensive tactics
  • Driving and pursuits
  • Use of force to include
    1. Verbal tactics
    2. Skills

    4. Law
  • Field training & evaluation program

In addition, the Training & Recruiting Division is responsible for the recruiting, selection, and hiring process for certified and civilian positions at the Sheriff’s Office. The recruiting staff take multiple recruiting trips to seek out top law enforcement candidates and work to prepare them for academy, ensuring that the most qualified individuals become Sheriff’s Office deputies.

While the Training & Recruiting Division has different tasks to typical law enforcement duties, they are essential to the overall well-being of the Sheriff’s Office. The team consists of a non-sworn Hiring and Recruiting Coordinator, a Training Deputy, an Academy Lead Instructor, an Administrative Sergeant, an Administrative Lieutenant and the Administrative Captain.
